The Old Cooker

Pita Po Boys

Something light for hot summer days... Pita Po Boys. Combine equal parts mayo & seafood sauce with some banana pepper rings and mix in the fried shrimp. Add lettuce, some cuke slices and whatever else you like into the warm pita.

Yep, it's as good as it sounds.

Which is healthier ... pita or plain white bread?

Pita of course, right?  Hold on, maybe the obvious isn't so obvious.  The cruel reality is that when you balance it all off they are virtually the same in nutritional content, with white bread actually having a slight edge for those in the 50+ age category.  Really?

Let's look at the facts (per slice):

 White breadPita bread
Calories130110
Total Fat (g)00.5
Saturated Fat (g)00
Carbs (g)2622
Fiber (g)45
Protein (g)55
Sugar (g)14
Sodium (mg)200220

So white bread is slightly higher in the calorie department, but pita bread does contain a little fat.  White bread again scores slightly higher in carbs but less in fiber.  It is a dead heat for protein but pita bread has a whopping FOUR times the amount of sugar and a bit more sodium, both of which we need to be concerned about as we get older.

Sure, you say, so why am I posting a recipe using mayo, among other not-so-healthy things.  Because I never promised this blog to be about eating healthy.  It's all about eating what you enjoy (at least what I enjoy) in moderation.  I'll continue to throw in little factoids like this from time to time, but you've survived in life so far without me telling you what's good or not good for you.  So continue doing so and eat what you want to eat.

Thought for the day:

"Part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside"

-Mark Twain
